Running Shoes at Tata Mumbai Marathon 2023

During the 2019-20 running season, we crawled the Strava to gather shoe data from runners who ran the Delhi half-marathon and Tata Mumbai marathon. At that time, we published a list of the top running shoes.

Over the last three years, how has the running shoe landscape changed in India? Unfortunately, Strava made it extremely difficult to extract data. Could there be an alternative? What better way than to find it out than from the participants of India’s largest marathon. We have scoured through the pictures of top placed runners from Tata Mumbai Marathon to get a sense of how the running shoe landscape has changed.

• The most popular brand among the Top 10 runners is Nike, followed by Brooks and Asics.

• The three leading shoe models: Nike VaporFly Next %, Brooks Hyperion Elite, and Asics Metaspeed Sky.

Popularity Trend

Top 10 finishers however doesn’t indicate the popularity trend, so we have identified the shoes of Top 100 runners to see the trend of popularity.

Here is how the popularity trends look like

• Nike is the most popular shoe brand (48 runners) with roughly half the top 100 runners using it.
• Brooks, Saucony, Adidas, Asics and Puma take the rest of the positions.
• Interestingly there are couple of barefoot runners in the top 100.

• Nike VaporFly Next% and Next% 2 are the favorites for the top 100. 31 of the top 100 are using these two shoes.
• Nike AlphaFly Next % and Next% 2 comes next with 12 runners using it among the top 100.
• Brooks Hyperion Elite, Saucony Endorphin Pro, Adidas Adios Pro, Asics MetaSpeed, are the remaining shoes in that order of popularity.
